It's Time to Bust these 3 Ransomware Myths

Welcome to the Aabyss blog

Regarding ransomware, there's much misinformation out there. But unfortunately, most of it is based on misunderstandings or outdated information. In this blog, we will help you bust three common ransomware myths.

Myth #1:

Paying the ransom is the best way to recover your data; however, this is not the case. Paying a ransom does not guarantee that you will be able to recover your data, and in some cases, it even encourages the attackers to keep targeting your organisation. The most effective way to recover your data is to have a secure backup system in place so you can roll back any changes.

Myth #2:

My backups will get me back up and running. It's tempting to think that backups are all you need to protect yourself from ransomware, but they're not foolproof. Backups are only adequate if they are current and regularly tested, and they will keep ransomware from encrypting your data in the first place. Out-of-date or incomplete backups won't be much help if ransomware takes your data hostage. Additionally, backups should be stored in an unconnected device or cloud service—otherwise, cybercriminals could encrypt those.

Myth #3:

My antivirus software provides complete protection. Unfortunately, while antivirus software can effectively detect and contain ransomware threats, it can't offer full protection. An antivirus suite is only as good as its signature database, and if it doesn't include the signature of a specific ransomware strain, it won't be able to detect it.

Antivirus software provides essential protection from known viruses, but ransomware attackers can often use unknown or custom-made malware that antivirus software won't detect. As a result, you need to take additional steps to protect yourself from ransomware, such as patching your systems and using strong passwords and firewalls.

Myth #4:

My business isn't a target for ransomware attacks. But unfortunately, all organisations are potential targets for ransomware attacks. Any organisation with valuable data will likely be targeted regardless of size or industry. The best way to protect yourself is to have a comprehensive security posture, including secure backups, effective antivirus software, and robust user education programs.

Small businesses aren't targets for ransomware attacks. False! As we've seen over the past year, ransomware attackers are more than happy to target small businesses; they often do so because they assume small businesses are less likely to have their systems secured than larger companies. As a result, all businesses need to be aware of this threat and take steps to protect themselves.

In Summary

So those are four common myths about ransomware.

To summarise, don't assume that paying a ransom will get your data back—and never assume that you're too small to be a target. Protecting yourself from ransomware involves taking a multi-step approach that includes regular backups,
